Each grit chamber shall have grit separating system and grit washing system. The grit will be collected and transferred to the collector via screw conveyor. The degriter shall be designed for removal of 100% of the 0.15 mm and above particle size grit of specific gravity 2.65 and above for peak flow of 2.25 Qav.

The working principle of a grit chamber in wastewater treatment is based on the difference in density between the wastewater and the grit. Heavier grit particles settle to the bottom of the chamber due to gravity, while lighter organic matter floats to the surface or is suspended in the water.
